In my second year of teaching, I began to take a close look at my teaching practices. In doing so, I focused on how I wanted to improve my teaching practices for specific subject areas within the school day. I focused on writing workshop one year, and then on science. To make changes in my practices, I observed other teachers, gathered and read professional texts on specific subject areas, and began to take notes on "what was going on" in my classroom during the teaching of the chosen subject area. I tried out new ways of planning, new ways of delivering lessons, and new forms of assessing the students to see what worked and what did not. At the same time that I was trying out these new approaches, I also asked the students for their thoughts about our time together. Throughout these interactions and exchanges, I wrote, questioned, and reflected on what I thought would happen and what actually did happen. From this, I shared with other teachers what I was trying in my classroom and asked them what they thought. I later discovered that these conversations with my colleagues made my time with the students more focused and purposeful. This was the beginning of teacher research in my classroom. Teacher Research
